Vietnam 7-Day Itinerary: North to South Highlights
Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, and Ho Chi Minh City in a week — without trying to cover the entire country.
Vietnam is long and narrow enough that trying to cover north, central, and south in one week means a lot of time in transit. This itinerary picks the north-to-south highlights — Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, and Ho Chi Minh City — over trying to also fit in central Vietnam (Hoi An, Da Nang), which is better saved for a longer trip.
Days 1–2: Hanoi
The Old Quarter's narrow streets, Hoan Kiem Lake, and a proper introduction to Vietnamese street food (bún chả, phở, egg coffee) fill two days comfortably. A water puppet show in the evening is a common, worthwhile add-on.
Days 3–4: Ha Long Bay
An overnight cruise through Ha Long Bay's limestone karsts is the standard way to experience it — book a boat with at least one overnight, since day-trip-only visits feel rushed and miss the early-morning and sunset views that make the bay worth visiting.
Day 5: Fly to Ho Chi Minh City
A domestic flight (roughly 2 hours) connects Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. Use the arrival afternoon for the War Remnants Museum and a first walk through District 1.
Days 6–7: Ho Chi Minh City and Mekong Delta
A day trip to the Mekong Delta (Cu Chi Tunnels is another common alternative day trip, depending on interest) fills day 6, with day 7 left for Ben Thanh Market, the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica, and departure preparations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 7 days enough for Vietnam?
Yes, for a north-to-south highlights trip covering Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, and Ho Chi Minh City. Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Da Nang) is better added on a longer 10–12 day trip rather than squeezed into 7 days.
Do Indians need a visa for Vietnam?
Yes — Vietnam offers a straightforward e-visa for Indian passport holders, applied for online in advance, with approval typically arriving within a few days.
